Let’s cut through the noise.

Cold and flu season is here and your next patient won’t be a textbook case.

Here’s a quick scenario I want you to walk through like you're behind the counter 👇

🧠 Quick Roleplay: “Help, my son’s been sick for days!”

A mother walks into your pharmacy with her 8-year-old son.
She says:

“He’s had a cough, slight fever, and runny nose for 3 days. I’ve tried Panadol. What else can I give him?”

What do you ask?
What would you recommend and what should you avoid?

Let’s break it down:

✔️ First, clarify symptoms & duration:
– Productive vs dry cough?
– Any wheezing, sore throat, or ear pain?
– How’s his appetite and energy?

🚩 Red flags to rule out:
– Symptoms >5 days
– High fever
– Lethargy or chest pain
In this case: We’re okay to treat symptomatically.

Now for solutions:

• Cough? 

  • Dry → dextromethorphan (age appropriate)

  • Wet/Chesty → bromhexine

• Nasal congestion? Try saline spray or phenylephrine (but avoid pseudoephedrine at this age)

• Fever? Stick with paracetamol : weight-based dose

• Rest & hydration are key: but parents often want “a product” too

🧠 Teaching moment:
This is a classic OTC case.
