🚨 Exam Season is Here!
Nail the Legal & Ethical Section with This Framework

ATTENTION INTERNS! 👋👋👋
With exam season right around the corner, let’s talk about one of the trickiest but most important parts of the AHPRA Oral Exam: Legal & Ethical scenarios.
This is where you’re not just being tested on knowledge — but on judgment, professionalism, and your ability to maintain the trust society places in pharmacists.
Here’s a sharp framework you can use to tackle any legal/ethical scenario confidently:
🔑 Step 1: Your Role as a Health Professional
Start strong by grounding your answer in your responsibility:
Your role is to PROTECT patient safety, maintain the integrity of the profession, and uphold public trust.
This immediately shows the examiner you’re thinking like a registered pharmacist.
🔎 Step 2: Identify the Issue
Clearly state:
What the problem is
Why it’s a problem (e.g. safety risk, breach of law, ethical lapse)
Don’t just describe what happened — link it to why it matters.
🤝 Step 3: Address & Rectify
Explain how you would take immediate action:
Rectify the error (if it affects a patient, ensure safety first).
Address any problematic staff behaviour with professionalism.
Show accountability, leadership, and a patient-first mindset.
📝 Step 4: Admin & Reporting
Examiners want to see you close the loop:
Document the incident properly.
Report to the relevant authority (e.g. AHPRA, PDL, or Pharmacy Council depending on the scenario).
This proves you know your professional obligations.
📚 Step 5: Prevention Strategies
Wrap up by showing forward thinking:
Education and training for yourself and staff.
Reviewing SOPs and policies.
Creating a culture that prevents errors from happening again.
This signals you’re not just reactive but proactive.
💡 Pro tip: Practice applying this framework to different case studies so your answers come across as natural, not scripted.
